Happy 103rd birthday Hina Miyashiro!

WAIMEA — A staff member at the Kaua‘i Care Center, Regency Pacific in Waimea was hopeful Hina Miyashiro would rouse from her nap when the candles were lit on Monday, which was Miyashiro’s 103rd birthday.

“She’s been active all morning,” the nurse said. “Her family all came to wish her ‘Happy Birthday’ and there has been a lot of activity.”

Three of Hina’s four children came to visit and help with the birthday festivities coordinated by the staff of the Kaua‘i Care Center.

“The only one missing is Janice Bourgeois,” said Wayne Miyashiro, the youngest of Hina’s four children. “Janice is the oldest child. Then, there’s Alan and his wife Judy, Amy Miyashiro and myself.”

Hina was born in Koloa, actually, the Kukui‘ula Camp in 1921 and attended Koloa School and Kaua‘i High School.

Eventually, she ended up working at the ‘Ele‘ele Dispensary that was located near the Big Save store in the ‘Ele‘ele Shopping Center.

“I remember that place from when I was growing up,” Wayne Miyashiro said.
