Congratulations, Vicky Ramos on getting her second granddaughter to become a Miss Kaua‘i Filipina when Kiele Rose Casillas accepted the badges of office, Tuesday from Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami, and former Miss Kaua‘i Filipina-now Miss Hawai‘i Filipina Xarika Felicia Casticimo.
Vicky’s daughter, Sandra Johnson, was the first royalty after being crowned in 1990, and Vicky’s granddaughter, Marli Genegabuas was crowned in 2018.
Kudos, Gavin Toyofuku and Shaun Paglinawan on spearheading the Mokiana Insurance Agency food drive that netted more than 700 pounds of food and more than $750 in funds for the Kaua‘i Independent Food Bank. The motivation for spearheading the month-long effort stems from doing service projects because Gavin said service projects always look good on college applications…yes, those boys have been doing this food drive from when they were in elementary and high schools!
The delivery of food and funds was a good opportunity to run into Kellie Okayama (haven’t seen mom or dad since the kids were in high school), and watch Kickass Concrete (kudos on the great effort at fixing up the Hanalei Pavilion!) try to push the 3:15 p.m. closing hour of the Lihu‘e Refuse Transfer Station…Kelvin Moniz said they had to move their Wednesday emergency food distribution to the grassy area outside the KIFB facility because of the ongoing construction.
OK, have you signed up for the Wilcox Medical free Keiki bicycle and skateboard safety day? It’s Saturday morning (and, its Primary Election, too…got until 7 p.m. to drop off the completed ballot!) when Tommy Noyes and the Kaua‘i Path host two bicycle events…the Kaua‘i Medical clinic, and the “slow ride” Bikes on Rice from Kalena Park.
