Happy Camper for Friday, August 18, 2023

Congratulations, Kekai Chock (he said he doesn’t speak Chinese) and Conrad “Kona” Giminez on the honor of meeting Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami (Kekai said he couldn’t go to work because he needed to iron his shirt), who presented the pair that form Kekona, a personal congratulatory certificate after Kekona earned the Best Jazz Album Na Hoku Hanohano Award during the 45th Na Hoku Hanohano Awards presentation held on O‘ahu in July 2022.

Now, are we going to see (hopefully, it’s not raining) and hear Kekona playing “Mynah Bird,” written by Mark Yamanaka, Kekai said, on Aug. 27 at the Wailua Bay Creators Fair at the Hilton Garden Inn Wailua Bay Kaua‘i? Gotta go early to get some of those Watasadas.

Closer to home, Saturday is the Memory Keepers (that’s the fancy name for the effort led by Patricia Gonsalves and Rose Manago of the county Agency on Elderly Affairs) rummage sale that runs from 8 a.m. to noon at the Lihu‘e Neighborhood Center as a final push for the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s that takes place in Kapa‘a at Ke Ala Hele Makalae, the east side coatal path. Christy Castillo said she’s going to help, but you never know what kind of good stuff you can buy.

OK, time for football at Vidinha Stadium in Lihu‘e, when Kaua‘i High School hosts Viewpoint High School from California. Kickoff is at 4 p.m. on Friday!
