Happy Camper for Friday, January 10, 2020

Melissa McFerrin-Warrack (it took her nearly three hours to get to work from the Westside Wednesday!) is thrilled to learn that the Kauai Ocean Discovery center is the first of its type to be located within a shopping center. That Kate Thompson of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Washington, D.C. headquarters, is a wealth of information. Ask her about the Santa Cruz aquarium.

Dayna McLaughlin was demonstrating her multi-facet side, balancing lunch (I recognize the Deli &Bread Connection wrapper) in one hand and doing work on setting up the center with the other, and Jean Souza was overwhelmed at the Tom Pickett (yes, he’s the guy with Kilauea Bakery &Pau Hana Pizza) marine debris artwork that’s going to be part of the center that opens Saturday.

Barbara Oki said she’s launching the box lunch of the century starting Feb. 3 (they’re going to be open from 6 a.m.!) because everyone knows of the Lihue Delicatessen influence on box lunches. Barbara is going to give the young people a taste of the Mrs. Ahana box lunches.

Julynn Ramos (she works all over the place!) said Matthew Oliver just opened a sushi place in the Puhi Industrial Park, close to Mark’s Place and Ko Bakery. OK, what was the lunch special?

And Elvrine Chow said Jen Ortal is now offering gluten-free coconut donuts on weekdays (except Wednesdays!) from the former Kalaheo Market (does anyone remember that store where Stupe Shimogawa used to be the butcher?) from “early morning til sold out.” It’s across the highway from the PS&D Kalaheo shop in The Collective building.
