Congratulations to Kapa‘a High School’s Alaka‘i Gonsalves on being named to the 2021 Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Hall of Honor!

He was the only Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation representative to be selected, said Chris Ang, one of the Kapa‘a Warriors’ athletic trainers, Wednesday night at the Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Complex in Kapa‘a, where pickleball players under the direction of Phil Baclayon (he’s a great basketball coach, too!) had to dodge a high pop foul from the practicing softball players.

Chris said he and Kapa‘a High Athletic Director Greg Gonsalves painted the Bernice Hundley Gym interior on campus during the hiatus of Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation sports because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Chris joined Preston Chong (he was helping the keiki with Zach Van Stratt and Logan Newbill coming out for inline hockey training), and former inline hockey coach Mike Goodnight and others for the weekly Wednesday pickup games at the Kapa‘a inline skating rink (Preston said they only had to cancel once because there weren’t enough players). Katryna Weir said the Roller Girls do derby practice Tuesdays from 5:30 p.m. Katie Parkinson said everyone is welcome to join the adults during the Wednesday night pickup games.

On the adjacent tennis courts, Marvin Nomi (he’s been doing pickleball for at least four years) said he heard about the great Kalena Park pickleball tournament organized by Lori and Craig Koga, and is waiting for the next tournament so he can bring some of the Eastside players (Jack Viohl came out from behind his video camera to get some hands-on action, too) to participate.

OK, it’s Friday night, so time to get ready for the opening reception (face masks worn and social distancing practiced!) of the Kaua‘i Society of Artists Washed Up Marine Debris Art Show at Kukui Grove Center in Lihu‘e, and the Triple K Strongman 9-on-9 youth football at Vidinha Stadium in Lihu‘e.
