Congratulations to Stephanie Iona, Laurie Yoshida, state Senate President Ron Kouchi and the big ohana of people who coordinated the visit of Hawaii’s first lady Dawn Ige and a lot of state senators to Waimea High School for a closer look at the makings of the ‘Aina Pono for 2020 farm-to-table food program.
Principal Mahina Anguay had her Menehune students primed and ready to care for the VIP guests (they even took a side trip to visit Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital to pick up Hawaii Health Systems Corporation Kauai Region CEO Lance Segawa before meeting up with Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami and other Kauai dignitaries at the school), and what a pleasure to meet up with Robert Kanna and chef Mike Young of the Sheraton Kauai Resort, who worked alongside the Waimea culinary-academy students in preparing all those lunches. Kallen Wachi said when the students found out Kauai Shrimp was on the menu, everybody came to lunch.
Kudos to Coach Keli‘i Morgado and the Kauai Interscholastic Federation on hosting the Billy Tees Hawaii High School Athletic Association state bowling tournament. Kauai Bowl was hopping, and Harry Shigekane of Daddy O’s was even planning on getting some special bento packages ready for the hungry bowlers.
More celebrations are on tap when the Kauai Community Market celebrates its 10th anniversary Saturday (it’s open from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.), where Cynthia Chieng has the Joyful Noise taiko ensemble performing to bring their joy to the market that is a partnership with the Kauai County Farm Bureau and Kauai Community College.
