Happy Camper for Friday, October 18, 2019

Congratulations to Myrvie Buster and her Garden Island Federal Credit Union ohana that hosted a garage sale benefiting the Kauai United Way (there’s still time to get involved with the Kauai United Way Walk-a-thon coming up Saturday, Oct. 26, ahead of the weekend celebrating Halloween!) a few days ahead of International Credit Union Day (Maren Rasay said GIFCU is baking stuffs for their members!) … and that pen works really good!

More kudos to Leslie Uri of Waimea High School, who finally found her star (designating her a team marksman) during the shootout against Kauai High School. Leslie ended the event tied with Rhona Lei Batacan and was awarded the team designation after her final shooting position netted her a higher score than Batacan. The Waimea girls, Kauai Interscholastic Federation champions in the sport, will be doing fundraising so all of the girls can attend the state championships on Tuesday, Oct. 29, on Oahu.

Leslie’s crowning touch came Wednesday afternoon when she was crowned the 2019 Miss Kauai Veteran by her dad Rogelio Uri, and got her sash of office from mom Cheery Uri before an audience of the leadership of the Kauai Veterans Council, and all her friends (including Batacan and Julienne Gawaran — she would be the runner-up Miss Kauai Veteran!). Uri makes her first public appearance Saturday, Nov. 2 at the Veterans Day Parade that takes place in Kapaa.
