Happy Camper for Friday, October 21, 2022

Happy birthday to Waimea High School middle Safina Sandblom, who spent her special day (baby brother was running around the Wilcox Gymnasium on the Island School campus in Puhi with a handful of mini birthday balloons, and grandma and grandpa had a birthday balloon bouquet) fighting the Island School Voyagers for the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation girls volleyball championship.

Congratulations, Coach Deej Pelaris and the Voyagers, on a hard-fought, well deserved title … Good luck at states!

Chef Mark Oyama (he said there were more than 300 people at the Kekaha informational meeting on the state’s efforts to control more of Kaua‘i’s ocean waters!), Chef Steve Nakata and Duane Miyasato welcomed Chef Eric Oto of G.Lion Hawai‘i to do a chef’s demo (it’s been a while since we had chef’s demo at the pop up farmers market at The Shops at Kukui‘ula) for the Kaua‘i Community College culinary arts students, the shoppers at The Shops (even John Rivera got to sample the vegan salad on his break), and a preview for the 2022 Po‘ipu Food and Wine Festival Pa‘ina Saturday night (Jodi Kjeldsen said they still have a few tickets available at poipufoodandwinefestival.com) that benefits the culinary arts students.

Pillare Mukai of The Shops reminded people about the free Great Pumpkin giveaway at the Palm Court Friday (that’s today!) from 4 p.m. until the supply of locally grown pumpkins are gone.

And don’t forget Saturday at the Grove Farm Market from 9:30 a.m. in Puhi (wonder if the KIF cross-country championships at the Island School course will be done before they run out).
