Happy Camper for Monday, February 10, 2020

Andru Alconcel (he was one of the Kaua‘i High School Key Club volunteers) said his arms were so sore they couldn’t move. His competitor, Dalson Cua, agreed, as the pair dueled in ‘uma, or Hawaiian arm wrestling, Saturday during Ka Moku O Manokalanipo Pa‘ani Makahiki Games (kudos to Julie Kaneali‘i…yes, kupuna ‘Ihi Kaneali‘i was there…as was her brother Koko Kaneali‘i…good thing no mo’ anymore Kapa‘a basketball).

Tom Lindsey was the bearer of Lono (it’s not the same one that was at the St. Catherine School Catholic Schools Week opening), and Nelson Ka‘ai did the pu honors.

Kudos to Jennifer Ortal and her community ‘ohana, Melissa McFerrin-Warrack and the Kukui Grove Center support crew on pulling together the Gifts from the Heart pop-up that featured a lot of activities for everyone from keiki to adult, just in time for Valentine’s Day (it’s on Friday, people!).

What a great addition to the Kaua‘i Ocean Fest program on the kumulipo (Hawaiian creation chant) that had the Kaua‘i Ocean Discovery closed so people could enjoy the workshop. Jean Souza was pleased with the crowd of more than 50 talk-story participants, and about the same for Saturday’s workshop. Of course, Melissa was thrilled with the hula performance that had the performers mingling with the food-court audience enjoying their Friday meals (Barbara Oki said their Ahana-era box lunches are selling out every day since starting Monday).

More kudos to Maryann Tabuchi and her state Department of Education crew and the many community partners on a super-great Kaua‘i Regional Science and Engineering Fair, where Natsumi Yamasato (Aaron Yamasato has his Comic Con coming up soon) had the Wilcox Elementary School Science Technology Engineering and Math students (and Principal Corey Nakamura) getting everyone hands-on involved in all kinds of activities.
