What a great weekend for host families to have for taking their Okinawa Christian University students for a taste of a Kaua‘i weekend as Joann Watanabe (she’s been hosting students from when David Iha was the Kaua‘i Community College chancellor!) had her students experiencing the opening night of the Kaua‘i Quilt Show (those Mini Quilt Challenge pieces are absolutely amazing, and you need to check it out before Wednesday, Feb. 26), decorating Valentine’s Day cookies with Melissa McFerrin-Warrack (Jen Ortal was busy setting up the photo booth near the Bandwagon kids doing love music), and visiting with Jean Souza at the Kaua‘i Ocean Discovery center, where Mele Kahalepuna Chun had people coming from Maui to help with the featherwork and lei presentations.
And the excitement didn’t stop there, as Sarah Styan had her students, Sara Kinjo and Haruka Tokeshi, experiencing the Kaua‘i Community Market, where Johnny Gordines said a lot of the farmers are overflowing with fruits (wow, bananas and avocadoes) and veggies right now (it must’ve been all that rain), and the papayas are starting to come in strong. Terry Gordines was buying pineapples to take on her mainland trip, and Jason Ebesu even got her some Kaua‘i Coffee to pack. And don’t forget Al Sugano and the orchids, or the University of Hawai‘i Master Gardeners, who have been doing some brisk business as people get ready for the Garden Fair. And how about Sunny Side Up (Beth Tokioka) and Crispy bacon, Marty Amaro), who had last-minute tickets for the American Culinary Federation Breakfast held Sunday at KCC (Styan said that was on the agenda too).
