Happy Camper for Monday, July 10, 2023

Char Ono, a Taiko Kaua‘i member that provided the intermission entertainment at the Lihu‘e Hongwanji bon dance on Saturday, said the three Japanese sailors — Shin Kawamoto, Shuji Nishimura and Tatsuo Tsuchiyama — finally reached home on Friday after spending more than a year sailing around the world.

Kaleo Carvalho (what? The county Employees Council hosted a chili cookoff on Friday night?) said the first rowers of ocean canoes in The World’s Toughest Row sponsored by Atlantic Campaigns (they rowed the Atlantic Ocean for the past 10 years, and this is the first time they’re doing the Monterrey, California to Hanalei Bay feat!) is supposed to arrive some time Tuesday night. And Lois Andersson of the Nawiliwili Yacht Club (yes, the Japanese sailors participated in one of the club’s Shoreline Series races while here for rest and supplies) said there are yacht clubs in the Philippines, when Carl Stepath presented NYC Commodore John Sawyer with a burgee during the Wahine Series, Race No. 2. It appeared Bonnie Tiffany was heading for her second win aboard Bonjolea II.

Tommy Noyes was talking with Greg Askew about “Barbie Gears” during the Bikes on Rice on Saturday. Don’t forget the 2023 Bike Safety Day at the Wilcox Medical Center coming up Saturday from 8 to 11 a.m., where Tommy will be there helping young bike riders (he was giving Dave Sharma’s folding bike a once-over before rolling).

Do we have any Prime Day deals, here? It happens July 11 and 12.
