Happy Camper for Monday, July 5, 2021

Congratulations to Kumu Hula Leina‘ala Pavao Jardin and na wahine o Halau Ka Lei Mokihana O Leina‘ala for their great finishes at the Merrie Monarch Hula Festival — fifth place in Kahiko, and third place in ‘Auana —where the judging was very close! Kudos, too to the kane performers who participated in the competitive event for the halau’s first time!

Kudos and mahalo, too, to E Ola Mau and its numerous sponsors on the Kekaha Food Relief 2021 event that took the place of the annual July Fourth shindig with fireworks — food instead of fireworks! Pastor Darryl Cua of the Westside Christian Center said the smiles represent hope as we plug through this COVID-19 thing (Pua Kaohelauli‘i and Blanca Gil were plugging the vaccination clinic coming up Saturday at the Kekaha Neighborhood Center from 8 to 10 a.m.)… Sandi Kato-Klutke got Max to get up early to drive over to the Westside where the event had all the dignitaries from the Great Pumpkin Harvest having as much fun in getting food (Wes Perreira didn’t forget the Goteborg!) to grateful families…even Felicia Cowden took a turn leading those people who are carless.

And more kudos to the Kaua‘i Skate ‘Ohana for getting started on the Pop-Up Hanapepe Skate Park… Dustin MacDonald said it’s been more than 40 years since he walked into Mayor JoAnn Yukimura’s office to talk about skate parks!
