Happy Camper for Monday, May 15, 2023

Who would’ve thought the “third party Internet outage” would’ve had the impact it had on non-fliers. The Moanalua High School boys golf team (and a lot of their supporters) got to spend Friday night stuck at Lihu‘e Airport because there were no hotel rooms to be had after their flight home was canceled, reported Hawai‘i News Now.

University of Hawai‘i President David Lassner was a no-show at the Kaua‘i Community College 58th Commencement (how did West O‘ahu Vice Chancellor Dr. Jeff Moniz do his magic?), and who else was stuck here (or there) during the craziness?

Was nice to run into Warren Haruki, Guy Yamamoto and Jonathan Ota, who represented David Ishii during the weeklong David Ishi Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association state golf championships at Wailua Golf Course. Kudos to all the course’s support staff (Coach Curt Correa got a special tour from Coach Ritchie!) on getting the course tournament-ready!

Speedy, the Olson 30, might not always be at the front of the Nawiliwili Yacht Club shoreline races, but skipper Dick Olsen and The Rotary Club of Kaua‘i did a most important errand on Friday, when it ferried members of the Moriyama Rotary Club and the family of the late Tsugio Kawashima (he started the Rotary student exchange program) to scatter Mr. Kawashima’s ashes at Nawiliwili.

Now that Mother’s Day and graduations are winding down, isn’t it about time the Okinawan Dance Festival presented by Hui Alu comes alive again following the pandemic?

Ferdinand Dosono of Kaua‘i Kim Chee (marinated pork belly for cooking at home is the bomb!) said they just completed their July Fourth paperwork, but doesn’t know where, or when it’s going to happen. Anyone listening?
