Happy Camper for Monday, May 27, 2019

Kudos to Maj. Victor Aguilar and his Waimea High School JROTC staff and battalion for a great job during the busy weekend (they’re going to be part of the Memorial Day Service presented by the Kauai Veterans Council at Kauai Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe today, too!).

Unfortunately, Ed Kawamura Sr. takes his annual leave of veterans to participate in the floating lantern ceremony on Oahu (it’s going to be televised, too!). Kudos to Kathleen Langtad of Cub Scout Pack 168, chartered by Immaculate Conception Church, on not forgetting those veterans who are resting in Kauai’s cemeteries outside of the Kauai Veterans Cemetery.

The Cub Scouts spent Saturday decorating as many graves as they could before running out of the 4,000 floral pieces the Pack (I’m sure the parents were an integral part of this, too!) created over the course of several months. Jimmy Oyadomori (he’s a vet, too!) said these young people deserve a lot of credit for doing what they do, including Boy Scout Troop 148 and Cub Pack 148, chartered by Lihue Christian Church, which spent Saturday cleaning graves at the Kauai Veterans Cemetery.

And the Girl Scouts were busy with Memorial Day, too, as Angela Hoover got several troops together to host the Lei of Aloha table at Kukui Grove Center, where people could stop by and create lei (Angela said the Kapaa Elementary School May Festival participants could deposit their lei for Memorial Day, too) for today’s service.

More kudos to Bradley Chiba (who forgot the plug for the cooler?) and the Lihue Baseball League on hosting its annual Da Bash baseball tournament (championships start as early as 9 a.m. today!), featuring 12 Bronco division and 10 Mustang division teams, including teams from Oahu and Maui (one of the Maui Sandlot parents even had the humungous coconut sunflower seeds — and she hadn’t gone to Sueoka Store yet!).
