Happy Camper for Monday, November 11, 2019

Kenny Ishii was supposed to meet a film crew at the Kauai Community Market at Kauai Community College in Puhi Saturday, and Amy Chun was visiting with friends who are on Kauai for the robotics competition at Kukui Grove Center.

Kudos to Johnny Gordines of the Kauai County Farm Bureau and Chancellor Helen Cox of Kauai Community College on the 10th anniversary of the Kauai Community Market that was celebrated Saturday, welcomed by the downpour (Stephen Fujii missed the Joyful Noise taiko drum performance because he turned around and went home) that couldn’t dampen the spirit. Laurie Ho missed out on the Hanalei Taro specials, and Dave Andersland and Laura Cristobal Andersland came in person to the Salty Wahine Gourmet Sea Salts booth to offer their 2009 price rollbacks for the special market.

And more parties galore as Mark Oyama said the gala is back in the guise of the Poipu Paina that is a part of the Poipu Food and Wine Festival (remember the Chopped competition last year?) presented by the Poipu Beach Foundation, the Hawaii Tourism Authority, Southwest Airlines (kudos on the opening of the Lihue Airport station Sunday!), and Koloa Landing Resort (Chef Rafael Camarillo said Timbers Resort was one of the Poke Festival winners, and the Kauai Poke Company with Taylor Sakimae was the overall winner!)… kudos to Kauai’s Teacher of the Year Megan Nii and her Dream Team of teachers for taking the night off to enjoy … and wasn’t there a Southwest Air flight among the silent auction with the special Maunaola shirt that was presented to all the participating chefs?

Don’t forget the Veterans Day service presented by the Kauai Veterans Council that starts at 11 a.m. (11th day of the 11th month) today at the Kauai Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe. The council also presents a Veterans Day celebration starting at 1 p.m. at the Kauai Veterans Center in Lihue, where Larry Rivera said he’ll be performing.
