Nikolaus Daubert of Honolulu could not help but flash a double shaka when he crossed the finish line of The Kauai Marathon (yes, he was a full marathoner) on Sunday as Ron Wiley (he also emceed the Tire Warehouse 50th anniversary shindig at the Royal Sonesta Kauai Resort on Saturday night!) announced his name while he passed the run clock that flashed 3 hours, 42 minutes and 10 seconds.
Art Umezu, who was escorting the Iwaki City, Japan, marathoners Toa Ota and Kana Numata, said while the shaka is popular in Hawaii, Iwaki City is the only place where they have adopted the shaka sign as official, and celebrate Jan. 31 — er, one-three-one — as Shaka Day.
Kudos to Cheryl Shintani, Arryl Kaneshiro and Scott Sato (he had to rush off to return the chairs to Kauai Island Utility Cooperative before helping at the dodgeball tournament that was part of the All Saints Episcopal Church’s 100th anniversary). The three Kiwanis spearheaded the Kupuna Spelling Bee where the Key Clubs from three of the public high schools had reason to show up.
Kudos to Kleve Zarbaugh and the Kauai Lifeguards for helping with Na Kama Kai Kauai Ocean Clinic where keiki as young as 2 years old to teens 18 years old had an opportunity for hands-on learning and experience with the ocean, including a ride on a wa‘a, stand up paddling and more. Saturday’s program involved more than 60 students and at least a dozen of Kauai’s teachers.
OK, we start Kauai Interscholastic Federation girls volleyball this week. On Tuesday evening, Kauai High School travels to the Clem Gomes Gym to take on Waimea High School, and Island School travels to the Bernice Hundley Gym to tangle with the Lady Warriors. The Junior Varsity contest serves up from 5 p.m. at both sites, followed by the varsity contest.
