Happy Camper for Saturday, April 27, 2024

You’ll never know what kind of surprises lie at the weekly farmers market. Stacie Chiba-Miguel of A&B Hawai‘i said the May 1 version of the weekly Kaua‘i Culinary Market at The Shops at Kuku‘iula (it opens at 3:30 p.m.) will feature Kumu Hula Leina‘ala Pavao Jardin (remember the award-winning performances from the Merrie Monarch festival?) and members of Halau Ka Lei Mokihana O Leina‘ala, who will have a lei stand available as a fundraiser to help the halau take its younger performers to participate in the Queen Lili‘uokalani Keiki Hula festival on O‘ahu.

Kumu Hula Troy Hinano Lazaro and award-winning halau Ka Pa Hula O Hinano (they were the officiants of the recent blessing of Pacific Biodiesel Kaua‘i operations at G and R) will honor the lei and how it represents aloha during a special presentation on May 1 at the Royal Sonesta Kaua‘i Resort (they were also recruiting associates at the Kaua‘i Job Fair on Thursday) on the heels of the annual Kaua‘i Museum lei competition that will be judged and exhibited at the Royal Sonesta from 10 a.m. on May 1 … May 1 is May Day is Lei Day.

Kumu Hinano said their presentation is also a fundraiser for the Maui hula competition where the halau took top honors during last year’s presentation.

And, don’t forget, Sunday is the Wailua Bay Creators Fair (it’s the last Sunday of the month) at the Hilton Garden Inn from early.
