Happy Camper for Saturday, Friday 17, 2024

Bonjolea II, a 36-foot Sydney, did not have her new spinnaker Black Beauty on hand when the Nawiliwili Yacht Club sounded the horn on its fourth race of the new sailing season. Bonjolea II already won the first three races with Bonnie Tiffany (she had visitors from Iowa joining the NYC Race Committee on the mole) behind the wheel, and on Thursday appeared to be heading for another victory (gotta wait for the corrected times for verification) despite the churnings created by Jim Saylor aboard Fast Company. The yacht races go on Thursdays through Halloween, when the NYC takes a break because of unfavorable ocean (and sometimes weather) conditions.

Kudos to Tom Freestone and his Hokuala team on getting the 47th John A. Burns Intercollegiate (tournament creator Robert Takano’s widow June Takano and her family had a ringside seat to the University of Hawai‘i men’s golf team at the Hokuala No. 9 after enjoying breakfast at the Tip Top Cafe whose Jonathan Ota used to play golf under Takano’s coaching). June said former coach Ronn Miyashiro is now back in Hilo taking over the family business and Abe Tanaka (she said he’s from Kapa‘a) of Ani’s Bakery just brought her some pastries before they came to Kaua‘i for the tournament.

OK, it’s off to check out the All Position Clinic with the Herbig brothers and all the hands that make it possible for the hundreds of young football players to meet the big boys … just like when Megan Nii took her performing arts students to the Kaua‘i High School basketball game. Megan said a lot of the Wilcox kids had never been to a high school basketball game, and seeing the kids watch the high schoolers play was an experience. The high schoolers are super heroes (no wonder Kaleo Carvalho goes to support them).

And, if the wind dies down, Edwin Vea has The Beach House craft fair on Sunday with more than 50 vendors … does Flo have any new cookies?
