Happy Camper for Sunday, December 13, 2020

Kudos to Donna Lynn Loo, Grace Delos Reyes, Kealoha Takahashi and all those Kaua‘i Retired and Senior Volunteer Program Advisory Board members, county Agency on Elderly Affairs staff and volunteers who made the recognition drive-thru a success.

Despite the change from the traditional luncheon, the drive-thru was an opportunity for the recognized volunteers to call each other and socialize while carpooling to the drive-thru, with dignitaries like Carrice Gardner, who was able to break away from the matters dealing with the pandemic to thank the volunteers. They even had Mrs. Claus passing out bags of rice to the honorees.

Up at Kukui Grove Center, the usual lunch crowd (it was Friday, so Tommy Rita — he lives close to where Albert Moura lives in Kalaheo — was doing his food-court meeting…it’s all “off-the-record” and “low-key.”) didn’t even notice the arrival of Santa and Mrs. Claus to Santa’s House. Mark Bonilla of Jamba Juice made the Good Kid Book light white. And Tiffany Dick of Aloha Dance Studio (they have their annual showcase today at the Kaua‘i Gymnastics facility in Puhi, virtually, from 1 p.m.) was filling in the the elf who had to rush off to work.

Nicole Street was doing gallery-sitting duty at the Kaua‘i Society of Artists gallery, and getting a lot of phone calls. But she did manage to say she likes the ‘auku‘u that hangs out at the Kaua‘i Marriott Resort &Beach Club. Brian Atendido is thrilled the red ti leaf is starting to bloom, and is hoping to attract mejiro like the octopus tree that is captured in Nicole’s portrayal of the little green bird with the white circle around its eyes.
