Happy Camper for Sunday, May 14, 2023

Coaches are important, too, said a golf coach from the Hawai‘i Baptist Academy on Thursday during the opening round of the David Ishii (he’s a Kaua‘i boy like Gen. Eric Shinseki) Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association boys golf tournament at Wailua Golf Course. Kudos, Brent Mizutani has been helping since the girls tournament started Tuesday, as were Kaua‘i High School Athletic Director Keli‘i Morgado, and trainers Keith Burgess and Chris Ang.

During the unseeded Menehune’s Division II quarterfinals against Radford, Thursday, Waimea was the sole game that stretched into five sets before Waimea took the 3-2 series behind 14 kills apiece from Haweo Akeo and Kaio Tsuchiya (did Grandpa Val make it to O‘ahu?). David “Kaio” and Josiah “Jojo” Banasihan combined setting duties with 23 and 29 assists each, respectively, and Jojo and Kelani Lewis each finished with 11 kills each.

Kudos, Newton Young, for 40 years “of Good Dogs!” Newton was celebrated by the Dog Fanciers of Kaua‘i on Thursday evening following the advanced class for his dog training tenure, the final class of the 10-week course, and his birthday which happened on the same day as the Buddha.

Happy Mother’s Day, Kaua‘i!
