Happy Camper for Sunday, May 9, 2021

County Councilmember Billy DeCosta (he said his missus’s favorite time of the year is NFL football!) was ecstatic about the lights at Vidinha Stadium turning on Friday night for the inaugural Kaua‘i youth football games (kudos to coaches Teddy Arroyo, Michael Tressler and Kyle Linoz — he gets full ‘ohana support, too! — for spearheading the effort to enable the island’s youth a way to enjoy one of America’s favorite pastimes!). Billy was the stadium announcer, and if it was not so exciting on the field, a trip to “heaven” (the press box) to see his spotter would’ve been in order.

Kudos to Pam Arroyo, Jojo Kawamura, Shereen Ho‘opi‘i (another Lili‘uokalani Trust U.S. Department of Agriculture food distribution coming up May 18) and all the super wahine for keeping the gates honest and providing a pan pizza and Gatorade for the players and coaches!

This is the kind of Mother’s Day effort that demonstrates the value of mothers all over. Melissa McFerrin-Warrack of Kukui Grove Centerwas celebrating not only the appearance of a dozen Kaua‘i Made pop-up vendors (state Department of Education Kaua‘i Area Complex Superintendent Paul Zina and Myrvie Buster of Garden Island Federal Credit Union were thrilled to discover Anuenue Washburn, who happened to have Mother’s Day gifts on hand Friday) at KGC, where Steve Dubey brings some Mother’s Day jazz to the food court today, where three artists (what’s the name of that road?) are exhibiting at the Kaua‘i Society of Artists gallery.

And kudos to National Tropical Botanical Garden South Shore Visitor Center Director Toby Koehler and his ‘ohana on launching the Aloha Market (yep, many of those Kaua‘i Made vendors were there, too!), Thursday with Taiko Kaua‘i. Chcck them out Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (the lotus is still blooming!).

Happy Mother’s Day, Kaua‘i! Stay well and stay safe!
