Happy Camper for Sunday, November 29, 2020

Kudos to the many hands and hearts that served up Thanksgiving meals around the island for people who just needed a bit of aloha to brighten their day of giving thanks!

Tiani Kaui (remember her from the Kapa‘a High School girls’ basketball team with coach William Aki?) and her mom Mahea Kaui were on their way to ‘Anini Beach Park to deliver meals, but made stops at places like Lihi Park, the Kapa‘a swimming pool, and even the St. Catherine Cemetery before getting out to ‘Anini.

Chris Machorek and his Sheraton Kaua‘i at Coconut Beach served up to-go meals for the island’s first responders, and kudos to the many hands and hearts at the All Saints Episcopal Church gym and the Kapa‘a Hongwanji Mission (Mark’s Place — the turkey meal was the bomb — had more than a hundred people divided between the two sites) that cranked out more than 1,500 meals Thursday with the Kapa‘a Interfaith Association.

Barbara Oki served up a bunch of turkey (had ham too) on Thanksgiving, so got the day off on Black Friday, where Sara Miura (she was going nonstop cleaning the sanitizer dispenser) said the Deja Vu Surf Hawai‘i Black Friday tent disappeared because they wanted everyone to be safe.

Kudos to Emilia Knudsen, who showed up as a “guest artist” for the small work Big Show exhibit at the Kaua‘i Society of Artists gallery in Kukui Grove Center. Emilia was originally going to use the proceeds of her beach art sales to get food for the Kapa‘a Community Pantry (it’s in the Kaua‘i Store. Don’t park at the Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative base yard), but changed her goal to getting keiki presents for her Christmas event coming up Dec. 21. If people have a hard time getting food, they’re having a harder time getting presents.
