Happy Camper for Sunday, September 1, 2019

Yes, the OC16 crews had time for Hamura Saimin (and pies before the plane left?) before the Friday night Kauai Interscholastic Federation football opener at Vidinha Stadium, where county Parks &Recreation Department Director Patrick Porter could breathe easier because no geckos perished in the light boxes to cause blackouts. Bill Arakaki would not miss this event, and mahalo to Kapaa High School for taking a moment to remember former coach Wayne Watanabe.

Kudos to U.S. Sen. Mazie Hirono for taking the time to present four medals to Chito Isonaga on Thursday between visits to the North Shore flood recovery and Kauai High School food pantry. Chito is one of our elder veterans, the other being Genevieve Anderson, who was thrilled by the visit from U.S. Coast Guard Adm. Karl Schultz and his wife during an All Hands trip to USCG Kauai Station.

More kudos to the Kauai Police Commission, Kauai Police Department Chief Todd Raybuck, and Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami for acknowledging and recognizing the work of 10 KPD officers for policing and cleaning up Ke Ala Hele Makalae! The work done by these officers demonstrates the type of community policing done by all those who wear the KPD shield on a daily basis, so, again, kudos to Raybuck (his son Connor Raybuck was among the Island School air riflery shooters that opened the KIF season against Kauai High Wednesday!) and the entire KPD!

There’s still time to enjoy the long weekend as the Lihue United Church of Christ hosts its annual Labor Day breakfast starting at 7 a.m. Monday at the Lihue Parish Hall (that’s the one behind King Auto Center).
