Happy Camper for Thursday, October 11, 2019

Val Faford of Hale ‘Opio was having a lot of fun processing the “passports” from keiki during the appearance of Uncle Wayne (and friend) who had the Island School preschool and kindergarteners cemented to the floor during the Family Fun Day at Kukui Grove Center Wednesday.

Blanca Barion and Pua Kaohelauli‘i of the state Department of Health had a wealth of information (and some “Prevent Diabetes” pens, too!) on a variety of topics, including vaping (Valerie Saiki came in to pick up the discussion on the dangers of vaping), and Mary Lu Kelly of People Attentive to Children had the CEO visiting from Honolulu.

More fall break fun and resources come out today when Val returns with Hale ‘Opio for the Bully Free Concert and Youth Resource Fair that runs from 5 to 9 p.m. at the mall, with Nannie Apalla and the Keiki to Career Program, the Kauai Family Guidance Center, Alu Like, Kauai Police Department, Kamehameha Schools, and more, including Andria Tupola delivering keynote remarks.

Kudos to Robbie Melton and her Office of Economic Development ohana on a great Kauai Job Fair, where Rhonda Liu and a whole mess of Kauai Community College people were offering educational opportunities (Mary Williamson of the HIjoe pop up and the entrepreneur class said you’re never too old to learn something new), and Walmart Manager Diane Keeler came out to get firsthand experience at the job fair, where U.S. census folks (they can’t be pictured in the paper) were collecting a lot of prospective candidate names to help with data-collection for the once-a-decade count.
