Souper Sunday took on a whole new meaning when Ann Hashisaka of Kaua‘i Kookie’s Kalaheo bakery, marketplace and kitchen (love that term — they had spaghetti on special Sunday, too), teamed with Ka Lei Mokihana o Leina‘ala to serve chicken soup (homemade, no less) for drive-through customers.
Previously, Souper Sunday was the Clayworks at Kilohana event hosted by Susan Hartman on the National Football League’s Super Bowl Sunday to raise funds for the Lihu‘e Lutheran Church Mobile Munchies program where more than 400 peanut butter and jam sandwiches are delivered each week to Kaua‘i’s people.
That is a lot of food going out to Kaua‘i’s people who are dealing with staying at home (until May 31) and helping to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Kudos to Kaua‘i Police Department Chief Todd Raybuck and Senior Pastor John Cabello of New Hope Lihu‘e and their ‘ohana on a great Police, Pastors &Pancakes event where more than 500 meals were distributed to Kaua‘i’s youth (18 and younger) Saturday at the Puakea Golf Course (can’t wait for those Puakea chips when they reopen).
And more food when Bobby Valenti and his ‘ohana at Bobby V’s in the Coconut Marketplace in Waipouli had spaghetti and meatballs on tap Friday evening (who was worrying about missing curfew?) as a fundraiser for the Kaua‘i Independent Food Bank.
The free eats continue as the Police, Pastors &Pancakes open Saturday starting at 9 a.m. at the Puakea Golf Course in Lihu‘e, and Ka Lei Mokihana O Leina‘ala moves the soup to the Hanapepe Kaua‘i Kookie bakery location on Kaumuali‘i Highway Sunday starting at 4 p.m. Watch that social distancing…don’t want Mayor Kawakami “scolding” anyone for getting too close.
