Happy Camper for Wednesday, February 17, 2021

Maycee Martinez went from the grandma look (she said she wanted to wear the apron) to a high-stylin’ young professional over the Valentine’s Day weekend that started Friday afternoon at Kukui Grove Center (Read Across America is coming up Feb. 27) and ran through Sunday afternoon (the special V-Day treats went out real fast), with Steve Dubey and friends quieting down the excitement with family-friendly jazz.

Kudos to Emilia Knudsen (she was a pop-up vendor during the weekend at Kukui Grove) on hosting the special Valentine’s Day party for the residents at the Regency at Puakea in Puhi. Her efforts (mahalo, Emilia supporters) overflowed to have residents of the other care facilities being able to share in the heart cards, lei, and even some gifts.

Mahalo to Fred and Dominique Matayoshi of the Eastside Basketball League on launching its eight-week series, featuring 30 teams and more than 300 young people from the second through eighth grades at the Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Complex in Kapa‘a.

They even had time to join Stan Greenbaum, John Bungula (he’s with the Boys &Girls Club Kapa‘a Clubhouse, and somehow forgot Sunday was Valentine’s Day), and the Rotary Club of Kapa‘a in installing some new basketball equipment (final installation coming up after the new cement cures).

Sydney Brady was having so much fun making stars, her quilt ended up super-big, and mahalo to Toni Wass (she’s the chair for the 2021 Kaua‘i Quilt Show) so we could enjoy the blue-ribbon mini quilt by Liz Thompson of Princeville. How about the (novel) coronavirus quilt put together by Carmen Yasis? The Kaua‘i Quilt Show continues through Feb. 24, open daily from 10 a.m. at the Kaua‘i Society of Artists (entry day for the 2021 Spring Show is Feb. 27) gallery at KGC.
