Happy New Year!

Jeff Haigh of California who created a Mele Kalikimaka sand sculpture for all to enjoy at Kalapaki Beach, did another one, this time a Hauoli Makahiki Hou, or as he put it, a play on words, Hauoli Maka”tiki” Hou that feature four Hawaiian gods symbolizing strength, wisdom, health, and well-being — wishes he extends to all for the New Year.

Mahalo to Ed and Lilli Kawamura on hosting the annual mochi making at their home! Derek Kawakami had his family in tow for the event, and it’s amazing how many people come from all over to be part of the work and camaradiere involved in the process. They even had ozoni for people to preview ahead of New Year’s, and mahalo to Lilli for the ono to-go plate.

Hats off to Erica Kleinfeld and Pacific Fireworks on a great pre-New Year’s season (she was down to just a few pieces by noon Monday). Let’s hope everyone had a safe start to the new year.

Now, it’s time to get ready for the National Football League Super Bowl that comes just a few days before Chinese New Year welcomes the Year of the Boar on Feb. 5.
