Happy Camper for Wednesday, July 12, 2023

OK, Edwin Vea was having too much fun shopping at the Lihu‘e Hongwanji country store (Ernie Domingo scored a nice backpack!) during the temple’s bon dance festivities. Edwin almost forgot to mention the Beach House Craft Fair that will take place on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The Beach House lawn fronting the ocean in Kukui‘ula. Shop early, the food always sells out quickly, and selections are great with more than 40 vendors offering their goodies (and services).

Sunday is after the Back to School Bash at Kukui Grove Center in Lihu‘e, where the management is expecting more than 2,000 keiki picking up their free backpacks filled with school supplies. Don’t snooze, they’re giving away all the unclaimed backpacks when everything is done at 2 p.m. on Saturday. And when did Chip Bahouth and the Sheraton Kaua‘i Resort jump on the bandwagon?

For those who missed the preregistration, there’s the Passport Program (even backpack recipients can do this), where more goodies are available throughout the shopping center. And, when completed, the passport is the ticket for more prize giveaways through a drawing. Even the social media influencers will be there.

This weekend the bon dance moves to the Waimea Shingon Mission on Friday and Saturday with the bon services starting at 6 p.m. on both days. The Rev. Kohtoku Hirao and Diane Nitta (Ray Nitta didn’t want to drive all the way to Lihu‘e) said there will be special plate lunches (Michiko likes to do real curry), flying saucers (the Kaua‘i Broncos will be doing theirs at the Central Pacific Bank parking lot in Lihu‘e for the last time before they leave for the regional tournament), yakitori (if it’s chicken, you don’t need to say it because yakitori means “burnt birds.”), and more.
