Happy Camper for Wednesday, June 19, 2024

Happy Juneteenth!

It’s a federal holiday, which means the mailman gets a break from delivery so no need to check the mailbox because nothing will be there.

Kudos toReps. Luke Evslin, Nadine Nakamura and Dee Morikawa on the town meeting (the Department of Transportation’s Ed Sniffen was there, too) where the Legislative Team gave an update on the latest legislative session while members of the Miss Kaua‘i Filipina Pageant set up the stage for Saturday’s scholarship pageant at the Kaua‘i War Memorial Convention Hall.

Charlmaine Bulosan said the pageant starts at 7 p.m. and will feature Steven Domingo and the Filipino folk dancers. Tickets are available from any of the Kaua‘i Filipino Community Council members and at the door on Saturday.

Christina Martinay and her Kaua‘i High School Future Farmers of America students Sharba Holi (she’s gotta talk to that Red Raiders freshman who had no idea of the FFA) and Maden Labrador-Hardesty cranking out the shave ice featuring the calamanci (they came from Amy Chun’s tree) syrup prepared in a certified kitchen … perfect for cooling down in the near-90 degree afternoon. The FFA program also started selling fresh eggs from their 17 chickens and two roosters as part of their fundraiser to get to the national FFA convention.

Geraldine Baniaga and her Mother’s Filipino Comfort Food ‘ohana was busy as usual. She said they also appear on Sundays at the Harbor Mall’s food truck parking area from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. for people who want to satisfy their appetite for ono Filipino grinds.
