Mayette Loseto wanted to know what is a marang, a fruit she got from a tree from Hawai‘i Island.
Gastro Obscura describes marang as a Filipino fruit that smells like gasoline and tastes like pears, jackfruit and pineapple.
Mayette had a couple of marang fruit, one being three days old and the other just picked, Monday at the Pau Hana Market at Kukui Grove Center in Lihu‘e, where Hector Hernandez was getting excited about April 5 and the return of visitors to Lihu‘e Airport, where he works as a porter.
He said they got excited when 50 people came through the airport and, yesterday, there were more than a hundred people that got them excited. Hector, who is from Guatemala, knew about all those exotic fruits Mayette had.
Arlyn Perez, with the Kaua‘i Family Cafe — they cook at the former Hong Kong Cafe — still had the mark from her first dose of vaccine she got from the Lihu‘e Pharmacy that is one of the latest sites (they do it Wednesday and Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m.) where COVID-19 vaccines can be taken, and Stacy Pleas had to deliver all those memos before indulging in her Monday-night pancit palabok.
Bev Pang is the new volunteer (is Bill Spitz a volunteer too?) at the Pau Hana Market, and Amy Chun was trying to figure out what to feature that was new this week. No Elvrine Chow of Heavenly Haku this time — must be all that rain.
