Happy Camper for Wednesday, May 27, 2020

Yes, it was hot as heck Monday (Kahului, Maui hit 90 degrees), Mayor Derek Kawakami, but people endured the discomfort of wearing fabric face masks (Johnette Chun had a bunch more to offer, too) during the Memorial Day weekend — good job, everyone — Marly Madayag wants to keep the COVID-19 numbers at zero.

Kudos to Hawai‘i Army National Guard’s 1st Sgt. Cory Soares (he celebrated the graduation of one of his sons Friday during the Waimea High School alternative graduation at Kaua‘i Raceway Park in Mana) and his team of volunteers for placing all those American flags, and kudos to Ella Bactad and the Verizon Kaua‘i ‘ohana (yes, even those working remotely) on coming out to place the lei they made for those resting at the Kaua‘i Veterans Cemetery.

More kudos to Sarah Tochiki for spearheading Kaua‘i’s participation in Taps Across the Nation, where according to Kaden Keep (he’s an Eagle Scout who graduated from Kaua‘i High School Friday), Sarah blew at the Kaua‘i Veterans Cemetery, one of at least five buglers was at a lighthouse, and he was at the Kaua‘i Veterans Center, where at 3 p.m. (Johnette was keeping track on the smart phone), everyone enjoyed a moment of silence before taps was blown while Paula Schultz videoed the Kaden performance for uploading to where?

Definitely a virtual moment.
