A flash flood watch has been issued for most of the Big Island until Wednesday morning as the heavy rain over the past weekend is predicted to continue throughout the week.
With the exceptions of Mauna Loa and Maunakea, flash floods are possible across the entire island, with the National Weather Service advising residents to be cautious and watch out for fast-flowing water, particularly in low-lying areas.
In addition, windward shores of the island are also under a high surf advisory until Tuesday morning. Beach-goers are advised to exercise caution and be vigilant for strong waves and rip currents.
Parts of the island have already experienced heavy rain over the weekend, with a National Weather Service rain gauge in Honokaa reporting 5 inches of rainfall within 24 hours on Monday. According to NWS data, Hilo International Airport received about 2.8 inches of rain between Saturday and Sunday.
The NWS predicts that such weather will continue in Hilo throughout the holiday week, with the forecast currently indicating an 80% chance of rain through the end of Tuesday, tapering to a 60% chance on Thanksgiving Day.
Thunderstorms also are possible through Wednesday. The NWS expects “breezy trades” throughout the state for much of the week. However, the winds could intensify Friday, when they are forecasted to reach up to 13 mph.
