Police seized well over a pound of methamphetamine plus other drugs during a raid Monday on 17th Avenue in Hawaiian Paradise Park.
The raid included the police Special Response Team and a county helicopter, according to court documents.
All three individual’s arrested in that bust made their initial court appearances Thursday.
John Kaleolani Overturf, 38, who gave police a Holualoa address; Jacqueline A. Overturf, 50, who provided a Yamhill, Ore., address; and Roberto Segobia, 28, of Kealakekua — who is not the police officer of the same name — were all ordered to appear at 2 p.m. Monday in Hilo District Court for preliminary hearings.
Police described the operation that resulted in their arrests as a “high-risk” search warrant service.
Residents nearby said they were traumatized by the low-flying helicopter and orders given by bullhorn. Some said they heard gunfire, which police Lt. Rio Amon-Wilkins said was the deployment of “several nonlethal diversionary devices, which could sound like gunshots.”
John Overturf is charged with three counts of first-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, two counts of attempted first-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, plus third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, marijuana possession, possessing drug paraphernalia, and with being a felon in possession of ammunition and motor vehicle theft.
According to court documents, Overturf was in possession of almost 1 1/4 pounds of methamphetamine, 2/3 of an ounce of heroin, 0.43 grams of cocaine and 1.4 ounces of marijuana. He also was charged as a felon in possession of ammunition for a 9 millimeter round turned up in the search.
Documents state Overturf told officers he’d lived in the 17th Avenue house for about a year and that he sells narcotics as his primary source of income.
Police also found a 2015 Yamaha YZF-R1 sports motorcycle spray-painted black.
According to documents, the motorcycle was reported stolen in Kealakekua
between June 29 and July 1 last year.
At Overturf’s initial appearance, Hilo District Judge Harry Freitas denied Overturf’s request for a reduction of his $321,000 bail.
Jacqueline Overturf is charged with attempted first-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, plus second-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, two counts of third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, and a single count of possessing drug paraphernalia.
Court documents state Overturf was in possession of 17.5 grams of methamphetamine and a glass smoking pipe with meth residue when she was found by officers hiding in some brush near the home.
At her initial appearance, Freitas denied Overturf’s request for court-supervised release without cash bail and maintained her bail at $95,000.
Segobia is charged with second- and third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, fourth-degree promotion of a harmful drug, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
According to court documents, Segobia was in possession of 15.7 grams of methamphetamine, 1.6 grams of heroin and three Clonazepam pills — an anti-anxiety drug marketed as Klonopin.
On Thursday, Freitas maintained Segobia’s bail at $8,000. As of Friday, all three remained in custody at Hawaii Community Correctional Center.
