Ibara gets Da Beeg One!

HANAPEPE — When the dust settled, Kenzo Ibara was announced as the angler of the Overall Biggest Fish caught at the West Kauai Lions Fishing derby that cast off the banks of Hanapepe River, Saturday.

“We had an awesome turnout,” said Lion Charles Ortiz, chair of the derby. “There must have been well over 50 participants, counting the Lions, parents, grandparents, family, and supporters. There were also more than 20 anglers.”

Kieran Kicran Schonberg earned the overall most caught honors as well as taking first place in the Age Group 6 to 10 years old. Second place in the division belonged to Anthony Udarbe with Kristi Kato and Carmila Udarbe ending in a tie for third place honors.

Alilea Kahalekomo Rosario topped the Age Group 5 and Under class followed by Riley Anakalea in second place and Lahale Kua in third place.

Brennan Kato edged out Tyler Tumpap for top honors in the Age Group 11 to 13 years old division.

“This community family event was successful in many ways,” said Lion Eric Nordmeier. “It got families a chance to spend time together, and the Lions are here to serve.”

The Lions send their mahalo to all those who took time on Saturday morning to participate.

“This would not have been possible without the help of prospective Lion Lt. Shawn Keoho of the Salvation Army who helped with the walk-up prizes that every participant received on signing up for the no entry fee contest.

The Salt Pond Country Store donated fishing supplies, The Ocean Safety Bureau loaned rescue tubes, Dennis Okihara, and many more,” Ortiz said.

The West Kauai Lions meet on the first and third Wednesday of the month at Wong’s Chinese Restaurant in Hanapepe. Meetings start promptly at 6 p.m. with the next meeting scheduled for June 19.
