Island School sweeps inaugural Middle School Championship

PUHI — A nice cluster of Island School boys runners pushed the Voyager Middle School team into the top spot last Friday afternoon during the first-ever Middle School Championships hosted by Run Club Kaua‘i at the Island School campus.

“The Middle School Cross-country championship race at Island School was a huge success,” said Emma Burgess, a Kaua‘i High School cross-country runner, and the co-founder of Run Club Kaua‘i. “Since it was the first-ever middle school cross-country championship on Kaua‘i, everyone who participated made history.”

The middle school Voyagers’ scoring runners — top three finishers — filled the second overall through fourth overall places, led by Sawyer Munroe crossing the tape on a run of 10 minutes, 20 seconds. He was followed by Zachary Edwards (10:42, third), and Jonathan Primeaux (10:50, fourth).

Cedric Crampton-Nabaa of Hawai‘i Tech Academy grabbed the first overall finisher honor by crossing the finish line at 10:04 to lead the HTA scoring to second place in the race. Campton-Nabaa got help from Caleb Stebbins who finished eighth overall at 11:45, and Nathan Schmaeling who stopped the clocks at 12:19.

Kanuikapono Public Charter School finished third in the boys’ scoring, led by Max Zimmerman (12:18, ninth).

“There was some amazing talent amongst these students, and we hope they’ll continue to train and find opportunities to compete,” Burgess said. “We raced the boys and girls together on the 3k course, but the results were printed separately.”

Island School took control of the girls’ 15-runner field with Avani Keahiolalo taking the first overall finisher honor on a 12:24 run. That was also the lead for team scoring as Island School took top honors in the girls’ team scoring with the contributions of Janavi Srikanth (15:06, sixth) and Jaitha Srikanth (15:10, seventh).

Maela Pinky Stewart of Kanuikapono Public Charter School led that effort for the runner-up team scoring with the help of Jasmine Winston (16:03, eighth) and Lillian Malandruccok (20:49, 12th).

“Run Club Kaua‘i wants to thank everyone for supporting these middle school races, and to Island School for hosting the championship race,” Burgess said. “Much thanks to all the coaches, parents, volunteers from the Kaua‘i High HOSA and Media clubs, and community sponsors for making this event happen. We’d especially like to thank @spiritofcan, and @thekauaimarathon for donating prizes for this race.”

Run Club Kaua‘i will host a Fun Run, Saturday starting at 7:30 a.m.
