KAPA‘A — Kainalu Majors Little League is the first casualty of the Hawai‘i Little League District Tournament that is taking place through Monday at the Kawaihau Community Little League Main Diamond in the Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Complex.
After being nipped by the host Kawaihau Majors All-Stars, 4-2 on Friday, the Kaneohe Majors hit into a walk-off single in the seventh frame to hand Kainalu its second loss, 4-3 in the double elimination tournament where the winner will advance to the Little League Majors State Tournament.
Kaneohe, bit by a come-from-behind effort from the Kailua Majors on the tournament’s opening day, picked up the win in extra innings and holds a 1-1 record.
Kailua Majors, enjoying the tournament’s opening day with a victory, was shut down 2-0 on Saturday by the strong pitching put forth by host Kawaihau’s Kaho‘ea Nainoa Rita, who threw his maximum number of pitches, and got help from Idren Sardinha who closed with the final out.
Eli Reusser got aboard in the fourth frame with Kawaihau sitting on two outs and Reusser strapped with two strikes. Cannon Dela Cruz marked the run batted in to score Reusser and break the 0-0 stalemate.
Kawaihau added its second run in the fifth inning when Chase Capuy-Gray picked up a stolen base before going home on a Benson Carter RBI hit.
After holding Kailua scoreless in the sixth inning, Kawaihau retains the lead in the tournament with a 2-0 record. Kailua and Kaneohe follow at 1-1, and Kainalu goes home with an 0-2 record.
The tournament continues Sunday with a single contest scheduled at the Main Diamond. Kailua and Kaneohe will face off to break the 1-1 tie with the winning team advancing to face Kawaihau for the district title in a Monday contest that starts at 10 a.m.
