Kamalu Road bridge closed

WAILUA HOMESTEADS — The county Department of Public Works said Thursday that Yasutake Bridge on Kamalu Road north of Wailua Homesteads Park is closed until further notice.

The closure went into effect Friday, and is necessary for emergency bridge work.

“A Federal Highway Administration audit recommends the closure of the bridge for the public’s safety until temporary repairs are in place,” a press release said.

The county estimates repairs to the bridge to take about four months.

The bridge was damaged in March when a car overturned off Kamalu Road and went in a stream. The driver was treated at Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital in Kapa‘a.

During the bridge closure, motorists can use detours via Olohena, Pu‘uopae and Opaeka‘a roads.
