Kapaa High School defense sparked the first two touchdowns and sealed the win over Farrington High School, 36-29, before an appreciative home crowd Saturday night at the Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Park stadium.
Earlier in the evening, the Kapaa Junior Varsity took a 19-8 victory over the Governors’ JV off the field.
With the score knotted 29-29 following three quarters of lead exchanging play, Kapaa coaching took a page out of Waimea’s playbook by controlling the fourth quarter and chewing up the clock on a series of short first downs to keep the ball alive in Warrior hands.
The clock ticked down on the 29-29 logjam before Warrior quarterback Kaitin Mundon kept the ball up the middle to strike paydirt in heavy Governor traffic with 34.4 seconds remaining on the game clock. Warrior kicker Yair Antonio split the uprights for the 36-29 go-ahead.
There still remained 34 seconds for Farrington to redeem the quarter-chewing score, but on the first play from scrimmage following the kickoff, the Warrior defense read the playbook correctly and intercepted the Governors’ long aerial to seal Farrington’s fate, 36-29.
The Warrior defense forced two turnover that resulted in touchdowns in the first quarter, including a fumble recovery on Farrington’s first play from scrimmage. The resulting 13-yard score put Kapaa up 7-0 with less than a minute peeled off the quarter.
On the ensuing series, a muffed play on the Farrington 23-yard line saw Kapaa control and hit paydirt on a 10-yard scoot. Antonio’s PAT gave Kapaa a 14-0 lead with 7:20 remaining in the quarter.
Farrington found paydirt on a 2-yard charge with 1:30 showing in the quarter, coupled with a 2-point conversion by Joseph-Aiden Yasay for the 14-8 deficit.
With 9.7 seconds showing on the game clock, Malosi Ilaoa plucked a Mundon airball to set the second TD that came when QB AJ Allex-Joseph Stowers connected with Isaiah Kalu on a 22-yard scoring pass. Yasay split the upright on the score that saw the Governors take a 15-14 lead after 13 seconds was peeled off the second quarter.
Mundon answered with a 17-yard score, and coupled with a 2-point PAT, took a 22-15n bulge with 7:56 remaining in the half.
Farringron’s No. 2 QB Kenzo Kawai answered by finding Harold Gold at the end of a 30-yard aerial with 6:25 showing in the half. Yasay’s PAT boot knotted the scoreboard at 22-22.
But the Governors weren’t done, yet as Kawai hit Ilaoa for a 12-yard score with just 4.6 ticks remaining before the break. A Yasay boot saw Farrington take 29-22 bulge at the break on the Esaki’s side of the stadium.
A Kapaa interception in the third quarter saw Mundon reap a 1-yard score with 9:24 remaining to set up the 29-29 stalemate.
