Kapa‘a’s Orien Hodges goes max in KIF wrestling

LIHU‘E — Kapa‘a High School wrestler Orien Hodges became the first Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation grappler to complete five matches in a Kaua‘i tournament on Saturday during the KIF Tournament No. 3 held at the Kaua‘i High School gym.

“There was lots of good wrestling all day long,” said KIF Tournament Director Coach Mac Pigott. “For the first time ever, a wrestler completed five matches at the tournament. The National Federation of High Schools rule book limits five matches as the maximum number of matches a student is allowed to wrestle in one day.

This was a long day for Kapa‘a’s Orien Hodges, who went 4-1 in his second-place finish to De’Andrei Gonzales in the 126-pound division.

“Several wrestlers had four matches and the majority had at least two,” Pigott said.

Fifty-five wrestlers weighed in at Tournament No. 3 and worked through 52 bouts in 14 bracketed division.

Casey Bernabe of Kapa‘a High School grabbed fastest pin honors, taking her match by pinfall in just 17 seconds.

Pigott said there were no matches going overtime, although several wrestlers went the full six minutes, or three rounds.

“Kaua‘i High School hosted Tournament 3 in the shadow of the new gymnasium that is currently under construction. Schedules often change, but reliable sources are saying the new gym will be completed by this summer,” Pigott said.

“So, if things go as expected, Saturday was the last KIF Wrestling Tournament to be held in the historic gymnasium. For me, it is bittersweet. I love these old gyms and have fond memories of directing tournaments at them over the last 10 years. I do look forward to our first KIF Wrestling Tournament, hosted by Kaua‘i High School in their new gymnasium.”

The next KIF Wrestling takes place on Saturday as a Modified Duals meet at Clem Gomes Gym in Waimea. The first matches are scheduled to start at 10 a.m.
