Kaua‘i COVID-19 update: Case counts down to 51

HONOLULU — Staving off fears of a potential post-holiday COVID-19 spike, data released by Hawai‘i Department of Health on Wednesday showed that cases on Kaua‘i declined to seven per day from Jan. 3 to Jan. 9.

In total, there were 51 new cases reported on Kaua‘i and 1,343 statewide during this time period.

The test positivity rate on Kaua‘i fell to 6.2 percent, compared with 7.5 percent statewide.

This marks a substantial decline from the previous week — when 12 cases a day were reported on island with a positivity rate of 11 percent.

Five COVID-19 deaths were reported statewide, with none on Kaua‘i.

The Hawai‘i Department of Health Variant Report estimated that in late December 2022, the vast majority of cases on Kaua‘i were the Omnicron BQ.1.1 variant.
