Kauai Futsal wins 10U, 12U titles at annual tourney

Kauai Futsal traveled to the Big Island to play in the eighth annual Hawaii Futsal Championships at the Pahoa Community Recreation Center Gymnasium on Memorial Day weekend. Teams from the Big Island, Maui and Kauai competed.

Kauai Futsal’s 10-and-under team had the following players: Laysa Turner, Ryder Faye, Kobe Claussen, Jason Matie, Ezra Fonseca, Noa Geer, and Zion Labanon (GK). Kauai Futsal’s 12-and-under team players were: Coral Turner, Kaikeaokalani Potts, Kamakanaokalani Potts, Bear Miller, Moises Omar Perez, Haven Lathrop, Keira Caoagas, and Zaimana Labanon (GK).

All of the players united from across the island to form the futsal teams for this tournament.

Kauai Futsal’s 10U team went undefeated and was named the tournament’s 2019 10U Hawaii Futsal State Champion. Kauai Futsal’s 12U team was also undefeated and was named the tournament’s 12U Hawaii Futsal State Champion. Both teams were awarded medals and trophy.

Futsal is considered to be a smaller version of soccer. Futsal uses five players per team on a basketball-style court. The ball moves very quickly in a smaller playing area, forcing players to participate more, think and make decisions rapidly, and creative with their plays. Players typically pass, and then move without the ball to create free space on the court. The game is quick and extremely exciting for spectators.

Kauai Futsal is an organization committed to youth futsal development on Kauai. They are an affiliate of Hawaii Futsal and operate under the Hawaii Soccer Federation, a nonprofit organization. Kauai Futsal runs a recreational winter futsal league for all levels of players in the 8U-14U age divisions.
