Kauai receives $89M from state

LIHUE — The state House of Representatives adjourned its 2019 session last week and passed $89.1 million in capital improvement projects funding for fiscal year 2020 and 2021 for various projects across Kauai County.

Capital Improvement Projects include renovations, repairs and major maintenance to existing facilities, landscape improvements, new construction, land acquisition and utility modifications.

CIP funding highlights for Kauai County include:

Schools

• $3 million total for Kapaa High School, which includes parking lot, driveway, gymnasium, and site improvements;

• $2 million for Kekaha School to include repair, maintenance and renovation to buildings and facilities;

• $325,000 to repair and resurface Kilauea School’s outdoor playcourt;

Hospitals

• $8.7 million to the Kauai Region of the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation for improvements, renovations and equipment;

• $1.4 million for Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital to renovate the CT scan room;

Parks and recreation

• $800,000 for Russian Fort Elizabeth State Historical Park for comfort station, service road and pathway repairs;

• $500,000 for planning and design of a 50-acre sports complex in Anahola;

Water systems and irrigation

• $2 million for Kauai irrigation systems to increase irrigation system capacity;

• $12.2 million total for the Kalaheo-Lawai-Omao Water System for improvements, provided the county provides matching funds equaling 20 percent of the state funds ($2.4 million);

• $3.12 million total for the Kilauea Water System for chlorination facilities and other improvements, provided the county provides matching funds equaling 20 percent of the state funds ($624,000);

• $1.44 million total for the Waimea-Kekaha Water System for the Paua Valley Tank improvements and renovations, provided the county provides matching funds equaling 20 percent of the state funds ($288,000);

Airports and harbors

• $23 million total for Lihue Airport improvements;

• $15 million total for Nawiliwili Harbor improvements;

• $4 million total for Port Allen Harbor improvements;

Roads and bridges

• $900,000 for Christian Crossing Bridge repairs (bridge is over South Fork of Wailua River on state land used for agricultural purposes);

• $2 million to widen Kuhio Highway near the Kapule Highway intersection, and other improvements to increase traffic safety;

• $2.2 million for Kuhio Highway slope stabilization at Lumahai;

• $100,000 for Waimea Canyon Drive/Koke‘e Road improvements from mile marker 0 to mile marker 14.
