Kaua‘i road closures week of Oct. 11

KAPA‘A — About 20 people attended the blessing for the Kawaihau-Hau‘a‘ala-Mailihuna Complete Streets Project in Kapa‘a on Friday.

“Mahalo to Grace Pacific, the Department of Public Works and our community for helping to make this project come to fruition,” Mayor Derek Kawakami said in a release.

“I have walked this area countless times with my daughter Hailee when she attended Kapa‘a Elementary School. This improvement will help to slow vehicles down, keep traffic flowing smoothly, avoid confusion amongst drivers, and will increase the overall safety of this area,” Kawakami said.

In addition to realigning the five-way intersection of the three roads, safety improvements include new concrete sidewalks fronting Kapa‘a Elementary, Kapa‘a High and St. Catherine schools, new bus shelters and flashing beacons at crosswalks.

The first phase of construction for the project begins Monday, Oct. 11, from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m, the county DPW and Grace Pacific, LLC announced.

The scope of work consists of grading, demolition, installation of devices to prevent construction runoff from getting into streams, drain line, waterline and sidewalk construction in the vicinity of the Hau‘a‘ala, Kolohala, Mailihuna and Kawaihau roads intersections. This phase of the project is expected to be completed by Jan. 30, 2022.

Lane closures are scheduled for this phase of work on Mailihuna Road.

Anyone with questions or concerns should contact Marie Poynter of Grace Pacific 808-699-4654.
