Kaua‘i woman bitten by shark on Maui

LAHAINA, MAUI — A 27-year-old Kaua‘i woman was bitten by a shark about a hundred yards offshore in Lahaina, Maui.

The state’s Department of Land and Natural Resources reported that following the Sunday morning incident that was reported at about 10:40 a.m., shark warning signs were posted a mile each way from the Mala Warf in Lahaina.

The woman who had been spearfishing told the Maui Fire Department responders that a four- to six-foot Blacktip reef, or Galapagos shark bumped her.

After losing sight of the shark, she said it came back and bit her in the leg and she sustained injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Following the incident, Maui Ocean Safety and the DLNR Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement cleared the beach and water.

The shark warning signs will be posted until at least noon on Monday. If no further shark presence is detected, the signs will come down.
