KALAHEO — Kira Pimental has visions of returning to Kaua‘i with the capability of treating large animals, including farm animals.
“There are a lot of people who care for pet animals,” Pimental said. “I’d like to be able to do large animals that includes farm livestock. It’s just my lifestyle, I guess.”
Pimental was one of two recipients of Kaua‘i County Farm Bureau scholarships for $1,000 each, being joined by Braeden Yokoyama who received his KCFB Farm Family Scholarship ahead of heading to school at Arizona State University for his study in accounting.
“He completed his first year at ASU, majoring in Accounting,” said Joni Ito, the KCFB Education Committee Chair. “Braeden has adapted to college life, quickly becoming involved in intramural sports and various college activities, most notably, his acceptance to the National Honors Society for Collegiate Scholars for academic achievement.”
Prior to leaving for college, Braeden grew up volunteering with his father at various KCFB evens like the annual Kaua‘i County Farm Bureau Fair, the Garden Fair, and the Kaua‘i Community Market at the Kaua‘i Community College.
“Both Kira and Braeden continue to strive for their personal career goals and have proven to be excellent previous recipients of the KCFB scholarships,” Ito said.
Kira receives the KCFB college graduate study scholarship after graduating from the University of Hawai‘i-Hilo with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture with a focus in Pre-Veterinary Medicine. She will be leaving for the Oregon State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine later this fall.
Growing up in the Kaua‘i Livestock 4H ‘ohana and the rodeo arena, Kira worked at various animal clinics while attending the UH-Hilo on the Big Island where she maintained a strong academic showing despite her hectic work schedule.
Her passion and dedication to caring for animals is a driving force for her to continue her education and become a veterinarian.
