KFCE contest to focus on ‘Respect’

Kauai Family Community Education announces its annual essay/art contest, “Character Counts,” open for all fourth-grade students in public, private, and home schools.

The purpose of the 2020 contest is to encourage students to understand and practice “Respect.”

This contest encourages students to strive for excellence and creativity in reading, writing, and drawing skills. Cash prizes and/or gift certificates are awarded at island, sate, and national levels.

Applications and information are on the National FCE website: or by contacting Kauai FCE Chair, Carolyn Lum,

In 2019 “Character Counts,” Emma Badua of Wilcox Elementary School was selected first place at all three levels of this contest. “Trustworthiness” was the theme.

“Emma clearly expressed in her writing and drawing how she would demonstrate trustworthiness when standing up for a bullied friend,” a press release said.

“This was the first-time for Kauai FCE to have a state and national contest winner.

”Kauai FCE is so proud of our educators and students in taking on this challenge to promote the Six Pillars of Character,” the release said.

Application deadline is Jan. 31.
