KFD and Red Cross to partner on fire safety program

KAUMAKANI — An effort to increase awareness about the potential risks of fires will initially target the westside of the island ahead of the upcoming wildland fire season.

The Kaua‘i Fire Department (KFD) Fire Prevention Bureau is partnering with the Kaua‘i Red Cross on the “Sound the Alarm” pilot program, which also aims to take preventative measures to ensure the community’s safety.

KFD and Red Cross personnel are scheduled to meet on Saturday morning, March 9, in order to discuss a plan of action, organize logistics, and then head out into the westside community.

“Volunteers from Kauai Red Cross, along with the support of the Kauai Fire Department, will conduct a smoke alarm installation outreach, canvassing homes in the Kaumakani area,” said KFD Fire Prevention Bureau Capt. Kaeo Kinoshita in a statement. “Fire prevention actions like this pilot and individual preparedness are essential for the safety of our community.”

Team Rubicon, a veterans organization, will also take part in the program, which is anticipated to expand to other parts of the island of Kaua‘i. Dates, times and locations are likely to be announced at a later date.
