KOKE‘E — First responders with the Kaua‘i Fire Department and Ocean Safety Bureau conducted multiple rescues on Sunday, according to officials.
Firefighters were notified of the first report of a 57-year-old female visitor from California in distress on the Pu’u Hinahina Lookout in Koke‘e at approximately 1:40 p.m.
According to a preliminary report, firefighters with the Waimea fire station arrived on scene at approximately 1:55 p.m. and located the hiker 0.2 miles down the trail.
After assessing the hiker, firefighters utilized a stokes litter, webbing, and a trail wheel to assist her out of the trail.
The hiker was met by personnel from American Medical Response and declined further treatment.
The scene was cleared at 3:10 p.m.
At approximately 2:10 p.m., first responders received a report of a female Colorado visitor in distress off waters near Lawa‘i Beach in Po‘ipu at a surf spot known as Acid Drops.
According to a preliminary report, firefighters spotted the surfer who another surfer was assisting.
Firefighters entered the water with rescue boards and tubes, contacted the distressed surfer, and helped her to shore. Back on shore, firefighters contacted two snorkelers on the beach who were initially in distress but made their way back to land.
The surfer and the snorkelers did not seek further medical treatment.
The scene was cleared at approximately 2:30 p.m.
