Rehabilitation of a portion of Kilauea Avenue will begin next month.
Department of Public Works spokeswoman Denise Laitinen said a start-work date was issued to the contractor for Nov. 10, and work will begin on or shortly after that date.
Part of a statewide transportation improvement program, the rehabilitation work includes repaving, installing pavement markers, striping and traffic detectors along a 1.5-mile stretch of the Hilo thoroughfare, from the Waiola Bridge to Puainako Street.
The project contract was awarded to Jas W Glover for $7,446,000.
Bids for the project came in higher than anticipated this summer. Laitinen told the Tribune-Herald previously that the expected bid range for the work was $4.5 million to $6.5 million
As a federally funded project, 80% of the costs will be covered with federal money, while Hawaii County will pay the remaining cost.
According to Laitinen, the county’s share is $1,489,200.
Laitinen said the work is expected to take 300 working days to complete, weather permitting.
While work is being performed, Kilauea will be limited to one lane
of travel in each direction.
However, Laitinen said further details are still being determined with the contractor.
