King’s celebration accepting applications

LIHU‘E — The King’s Parade & Ho‘olaule‘a celebrating King Kamehameha has been scheduled for June 15 in Lihu‘e, said Lyah Kama-Drake, chair of the King Kamehameha Commission Celebration (KKCC).

Applications are currently being accepted by the KKCC for positions as Pa‘u Riders, members of the Royal Court, groups wishing to participate in the parade, and for craft and food vendors for the Ho‘olaule‘a that follows the parade at the lawn of the historic County Building.

Interested people, especially those interested in participating with a Pa‘u unit, should submit their applications ahead of a scheduled Pa‘u meeting scheduled for Jan. 18 at Kaua‘i Museum. The meeting starts at 5:30 p.m.

Application forms for Pa‘u riders can be obtained by contacting Betty Nakamoto at Because of the scheduled meetings for participating Pa‘u riders and units, the absolute deadline for Pa‘u applications is Feb. 28.

This applies to all other segments of the annual celebratory event that starts with the parade and the ho‘olaule‘a at the historic County Building that feature craft vendors, food, and live entertainment. The final deadline for applications is May 25.

Participating groups in the parade can include a float, decorated vehicle or motorcycle, marching bands, drill teams, walking units or a private mounted (horseback) unit.
